NEW! The Little House That Stood VeggieTales DVD Giveaway!

VeggiTales videos have been a favorite of mine since the nineties.  For a while, I would snatch up every new story they put out. Not only were my boys learning valuable truths from God’s word.  I was constantly cracking up at the funny TV lines grabbed, twisted, and liberally sprinkled throughout their stories.

That said, I don’t think this new one was quite as good as the oldies I remember.  There are two stories in The Little House That Stood, separated by a silly song.

In the parable about building on a solid foundation, the authors adapt the story of the three little pigs.  Only, the builder that ends up having the right idea is the builder using sticks.  The house of straw, as well as the house of bricks “float” away in the “Wolf River” flood.  All while the house of sticks, stands solid.

Of course, its because it is built on a solid foundation.  But it left me wondering if little ones who are familiar with the original story of the three little pigs, will get confused when they see what logically should have stood firm actually turns out not to be the best house.

I was also a little disappointed that Old Man Zucchini, the character who tied the Biblical truth to the story, was actually made to look a little daffy.  In my opinion, his character should have been protected to ensure kids felt they could trust what he said.

The second story uses a mixture of Mother Goose Tales to teach about being kind to your neighbors.  Only, the neighbors, to whom the mayor is supposed to “lend a handout”, are ridiculously whiny, lol.

Speaking strictly as a mother, I wanted to run away WITH him on his “Neighbor Vacation”, ha!

To me, it seemed a might too close to representing the way many view government for real…as the place to grab a free handout while shirking their own responsibility to help themselves and those in their communities.  Again, this is just my own take on it.  I really don’t think the writers were politically motivated, though!  Perhaps they should have made the main character just one of the town-folk…

My kids thought the video was pretty funny, all in all.   Especially when Mayor Dumpty was up on the wall, looking over the chaos that his lack-of-help created, and his telescope “ran out of nickel,” lol!  And the characters do eventually teach the truths they were designed to teach.

The bottom line?  If you’ve never seen any of the VeggieTales Videos, start with a few of their very first ones.  If you have loved them from the start, you will no doubt find this a fun one to add to your collection!

For a chance to win a copy, leave a comment below.  I’ll pick a winner from the comments this Friday.

Happy Monday!!

Update on my Dad:  After a really rough week, which had me looking at flights, he had a good day yesterday.  Praise the Lord!  His white cell count finally had a tick upward.  He also sounded stronger on the phone and was able to talk briefly with the boys.  Pray he continues to make progress!  And thank you so very much for caring, my friends!

Glad to hear your Dad is showing a little improvement.
I'm doing this review too and have mine ready to go up tonight. I felt the same way you did about the video - cute, but now quite as good as the old ones. Hope you don't care if I add you to my post so my people can sign up twice! (And you may do the same)

So glad to hear your dad is doing better!

Just this weekend, my 12 and 14 year-old were watching a Veggie Tale episode. I love that they were getting the adult humor now too. They're rediscovering Veggie Tales, and still getting the truths that are there!
