Is it possible, that in spite of your best efforts to convey love to your child, he still feels unloved?
Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell believe it happens all too often. In fact, in some cases, the lack of “felt” love may be the root of poor attitudes and behavioral problems.
In The 5 Love Languages of Children, they apply the love language idea to the relationship between parent and child. If you are not familiar with Chapman’s other book, The 5 Love Languages (written mainly for couples), here’s the basic idea:
Each person has a predominate language in which he or she gives and receives love. The languages are:
- Physical Touch
- Words of Affirmation
- Quality Time
- Gifts
- Acts of Service
For example, if you like to express your love and appreciation for those around you by doing acts of service for them, you will probably feel most loved when people do those kinds of things for you. Unfortunately, you might also feel unloved, in spite of hugs or verbal proclamations, if someone doesn’t offer to step in and lend a hand when you are overwhelmed.
Understanding which language each member of your family speaks can make a huge difference in whether or not you are successfully filling their love tanks. Their words. :)
In the case of our children, if we are conveying love in one language, and they feel most loved in another, your love might be getting lost in the translation!
Knowing their love language is even important when we discipline our children. It’s amazing how much damage we can do without even realizing it! And conversely, how much of a positive difference we can make when we purposefully speak their language!
This book is a must read for every parent! It will not only help you to determine what language each of your children speaks, it will also give you practical suggestions for creating a sense of security for them.
